The Imam al-Bukhari Phenomenon at the Center of International Scholarly Discussions

The Eighth International Conference entitled “Imam al-Bukhari – The Sultan of Hadith Scholars” was held at the Imam Bukhari International Scientific Research Center, bringing together leading Bukhari scholars, researchers, and representatives of prominent academic and educational institutions from Uzbekistan and abroad.

The conference commenced with a visit to the mausoleum of Imam al-Bukhari. In keeping with a long-standing tradition, participants began by reciting the opening and concluding hadiths from the great scholar’s masterpiece, Al-Jami’ as-Sahih. This was followed by the recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an and prayers for peace and prosperity for the people of Uzbekistan, continued blessings upon the nation, and success for scholars engaged in the pursuit of knowledge.

The forum was organized in a hybrid format (in-person and online) in cooperation with the Society for the History of Hadith (Türkiye), Dicle University (Türkiye), the Mosul Academy (Iraq), the Bulgar Islamic Academy (Republic of Tatarstan, Russian Federation), as well as the Tashkent Islamic Institute, the School of Hadith, the Imam Maturidi International Scientific Research Center, and the Bahauddin Naqshband Scientific Research Center.

Opening the conference, Professor Shovosil Ziyodov, Director of the Imam Bukhari International Scientific Research Center, and Barot Amonov, Rector of the Higher School for Hadith Sciences, emphasized the importance of institutional cooperation in preserving, studying, and promoting the rich scholarly and enduring spiritual legacy of Imam al-Bukhari at the international level.

The academic discussions focused primarily on Imam al-Bukhari’s pivotal role in Islamic civilization, his unparalleled contribution to the formation and development of the science of hadith, and the methodological foundations underlying Al-Jami’ as-Sahih. Particular attention was devoted to the analysis of the Kitab al-ilm (The Book of Knowledge) section of the collection, the historical tradition of khatm (ceremonial completion of the reading of Sahih al-Bukhari) and its documentary sources, as well as recent research on the extraordinary memory and exceptional scholarly abilities of Imam al-Bukhari. Participants also acknowledged the strong support provided in New Uzbekistan for preserving, researching, and promoting the legacy of the great scholar.

During the discussions, scholars presented a number of significant observations of broad academic relevance. They emphasized that the rigorous and meticulous criteria employed by Imam al-Bukhari in verifying and selecting hadith should not be regarded merely as historical scholarly principles. Rather, these standards continue to serve as a valuable methodological guide for assessing the authenticity and reliability of information in today’s world, where misinformation and unverified claims are increasingly widespread.

Participants also noted that Imam al-Bukhari’s decision to begin his Sahih with Kitab al-ilm (The Book of Knowledge) was far from accidental. From the perspective of textual scholarship, this reflects the author’s deliberate emphasis on the acquisition of knowledge and its indispensable role in the intellectual and moral development of society. This approach, combined with Imam al-Bukhari’s extraordinary memory and unwavering commitment to the critical evaluation of sources, offers a timeless model of scholarly rigor and academic discipline for contemporary researchers.

The conference further highlighted the importance of translating Imam al-Bukhari’s works, together with the rich tradition of classical commentaries on them, into various languages through a sound academic approach while making them accessible to wider audiences. Such efforts, participants noted, would contribute significantly to presenting the authentic intellectual, educational, and humanitarian values of Islamic civilization to the global community.

At the conclusion of the conference, participants adopted recommendations calling for the further strengthening of international academic cooperation, the expansion of joint research projects in the field of manuscript and source studies, and the continued development of new scholarly initiatives dedicated to the study of Imam al-Bukhari and his enduring legacy.
