THE LEGACY OF IMAM AL-BUKHARI: A BRIDGE ACROSS AGES AND DISCIPLINES OF KNOWLEDGE

An international scientific conference entitled “Rediscovering Imam al-Bukhari” was held at the Imam Bukhari International Scientific Research Center within the framework of the “International Academic Conferences on the History of Hadith” project. Organized jointly by the Center, the Hadith School, and Ankara University and Ankara Yildirim Bayazit University of Turkey, the conference served as an international academic platform for discussing contemporary research and emerging trends in the field of Hadith studies.

During the opening ceremony of the forum, special recognition was given to the distinguished place of Imam al-Bukhari’s scholarly legacy within Islamic civilization and to its enduring relevance and significance for contemporary academic inquiry and intellectual discourse.

The scientific conference was organized into six thematic panels with the participation of scholars and researchers from the academic communities of Uzbekistan and Turkey.

During the conference, the historical context of Sahih al-Bukhari, the reflection of early Islamic political events in hadith literature, and the formation history of the Samarqand and Bukhara hadith schools were analyzed on the basis of scholarly evidence. The discussions focused in particular on the study of the “Fitan” (Trials and Tribulations) chapter, the comparative analysis of rare manuscript copies preserved in global collections-especially those held in the Sulaymaniya Library in Istanbul—as well as the methodological characteristics of commentaries such as Fath al-Bari and Umdat al-Qari. Scholars also paid special attention to Imam al-Bukhari’s distinctive principles in evaluating narrators, the concept of “injaz” (the inclusion of innovative chapters not found in earlier hadith compilations), and the methodology of “thulathiyyat” (hadiths transmitted through three narrators). Furthermore, emphasis was placed on the contemporary relevance of studying Imam al-Bukhari’s works within the frameworks of modern Islamic studies as well as jurisprudential and linguistic methodologies.

At the conclusion of the conference, researchers presented scholarly conclusions on the moral and educational significance of Imam al-Bukhari’s legacy, a thematic analysis of his work Al-Adab al-Mufrad (“The Book of Etiquette”), and the bibliographic description of sources preserved in world libraries. The event concluded with the awarding of internationally recognized certificates to active participants.
