Usama Bozkurt, a recipient of the Imam Bukhari International Scholarship Program currently undertaking a research internship at the Imam Bukhari International Scientific Research Center and a doctoral candidate at Dicle University (T\u00fcrkiye), delivered a presentation on his latest research.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In his lecture, the scholar examined the life of Imam al-Bukhari, the eminent hadith scholar whose contributions have profoundly enriched Islamic civilization and global scholarship, as well as the social developments that followed his passing. His analysis approached the subject from the perspective of the sociology of death, an interdisciplinary field that explores the social significance of death, remembrance, and posthumous recognition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout history, many outstanding figures who experienced injustice or exile during their lifetimes have been re-evaluated and honored by society after their deaths. Examining Imam al-Bukhari\u2019s life\u2014particularly his final years\u2014and the period following his passing through this conceptual framework offers new insights into both his personality and the enduring social influence of his scholarly legacy.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The researcher further noted that it is no coincidence that five of the six canonical Sunni collections of hadith (Kutub al-Sittah) were compiled by scholars from Khurasan and Transoxiana (Mawarannahr). He explained that the region\u2019s long-standing intellectual tradition, characterized by rigorous analytical reasoning, theological debate, and the influence of the Ahl al-Ra’y (the school of juristic reasoning), fostered exceptional skills in the systematic organization and classification of knowledge among local hadith scholars. According to the presenter, the sophisticated and methodically structured chapter headings employed by Imam al-Bukhari in his Sahih<\/em> are a reflection of this rich intellectual environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

The presentation also revisited the well-known trials that marked Imam al-Bukhari\u2019s life. During the theological debates in Nishapur concerning the doctrine of the createdness of the Qur’an (Khalq al-Qur’an<\/em>), Imam al-Bukhari adopted a balanced scholarly position. He maintained that the Qur’an itself, as the Word of Allah, is uncreated, whereas its human recitation constitutes a created act. However, the polarized intellectual climate of the time failed to appreciate this nuanced position, exposing the scholar to severe criticism and pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Similar hostility later emerged in Bukhara, Paykand, and Samarkand. When the governor of Bukhara requested that Imam al-Bukhari provide private lessons exclusively for his children, the scholar firmly declined, stating:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI will not degrade knowledge by taking it to the doors of rulers. Whoever seeks knowledge should come to it.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

As a consequence, he was forced to leave his homeland and spent the final days of his life in the village of Khartang, near Samarkand, where he passed away shortly thereafter.<\/span><\/p>\n

The presentation highlighted that public perception of Imam al-Bukhari underwent a profound transformation after his death. Historical accounts relate that a pleasant fragrance resembling musk emanated from his grave in the days following his burial. Many scholars and local residents who had previously opposed or unjustly accused him later expressed deep remorse and repented at his gravesite.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the centuries, the mausoleum of Imam al-Bukhari has evolved into not only one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in the Muslim world but also a sacred place where people gather in times of hardship to offer collective prayers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Concluding his presentation, the researcher emphasized the importance of examining Imam al-Bukhari\u2019s life and legacy through the lens of contemporary social and cultural studies. He proposed several promising directions for future research, including a deeper investigation into the intellectual factors that enabled scholars of Khurasan and Transoxiana (Mawarannahr) to develop outstanding methodologies for the systematic compilation of hadith collections. He also underscored the need for comprehensive research projects devoted to the history of the Khartang shrine and the socio-cultural dynamics that have shaped the site from the medieval period to the present day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Participants described the seminar as an engaging and thought-provoking scholarly exchange, expressing confidence that it would provide a solid foundation for future collaborative research initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n
