The international seminar-training titled \u201cElements of the Codicology of Central Asian Manuscripts,\u201d organized at the Imam Bukhari International Scientific Research Center in cooperation with Coll\u00e8ge de France and the Library of the University of Languages and Civilizations (BULAC), successfully concluded its work on April 21.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the final day of the sessions, participants engaged in exploring some of the most complex and intellectually stimulating aspects of manuscript studies. In particular, the concept of the manuscript \u201cpassport\u201d \u2013 namely, colophons \u2013 was examined in depth throughout the day. Experts provided valuable insights into the social, political, and religious references embedded within colophons, as well as the specialized cryptographic techniques employed by scribes and the scholarly significance of symbolic markings. As emphasized, these brief notes can serve as crucial sources for reconstructing the intellectual milieu of a given period, the traditions of manuscript production, and even the social relationships among historical figures.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

During the seminar, particular attention was devoted to the technology of paper production\u2014an essential component in the history of the book arts of Central Asia \u2013 and its various types. Notably, the distinctive features of Samarkand and Kokand papers were at the center of discussion. Researchers examined, through practical examples, the durability of these papers produced from natural raw materials, their capacity for ink absorption, and their exceptional significance for source studies.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the second half of the day, participants had the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice. Under the guidance of Fran\u00e7ois Richard and Marie Eftimiou, practical sessions were conducted in which participants completed independent tasks on compiling codicological descriptions of manuscripts and identifying the characteristic features of bindings and ornamentation associated with the Timurid and Shaybanid periods.<\/span><\/p>\n

The concluding segment, marked by a dynamic exchange of questions and reflections, further enlivened the seminar atmosphere. Participants emphasized that over the course of the two-day intensive training, they had acquired new analytical approaches and developed a deeper awareness of the profound responsibility involved in preserving and safeguarding this invaluable cultural heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the conclusion of the event, all participants were awarded special diplomas and certificates.<\/span><\/p>\n
