On October 14, the Imam Bukhari International Scientific Research Center inaugurated the 3rd International Symposium on \u201cManuscript Culture.\u201d Within its framework, the international conference titled \u201cOwnership and Dissemination of Manuscript Works: Imam Bukhari and Hadith Manuscripts\u201d<\/em> also commenced.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This event represents the third in the series of symposiums titled \u201cManuscript Culture\u201d<\/em>, organized by the Center for the Study and Research of Manuscripts under Fatih Sultan Mehmet Waqf University.<\/span><\/p>\n

The previous conferences, held in 2022 and 2024, focused respectively on \u201cSabab al-Ta\u2019l\u012bf\u201d<\/em> (Reasons for Composition) and \u201cQuy\u016bd\u0101t\u201d<\/em> (Annotations and Marginalia in Manuscripts). The current symposium, organized in collaboration with the Imam Bukhari International Scientific<\/strong> Research Center, is devoted to one of the extra-textual aspects of manuscript works \u2014 ownership notes<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ownership notes are inscriptions indicating that a manuscript was preserved by a particular individual or community. Through these notes, it becomes possible to trace the historical journey of the work, its transmission from one owner to another, and its significance within scholarly traditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the opening of the event, participants emphasized the scholarly importance of the symposium, the need to strengthen international cooperation in the study of Hadith and manuscript sources, and the necessity of examining manuscript heritage through contemporary academic methodologies.<\/span><\/p>\n

The conference featured scholarly analyses of ownership notes found in the manuscripts of Imam Bukhari\u2019s \u201cAl-J\u0101mi\u2018 al-Sah\u012bh\u201d<\/em> and other Hadith works. In these studies, the primary focus is placed not on the textual content of the manuscripts, but on their codicological and source-critical dimensions \u2014 that is, on the history of their preservation, patterns of ownership, and the continuity of scholarly transmission across generations.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the first day of the conference, scholars from Uzbekistan, as well as experts from Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Pakistan, presented papers on newly discovered Hadith manuscripts, their ownership records, historical circulation, social significance, and place within scholarly traditions. The academic discussions continued in an engaging atmosphere, marked by dynamic exchanges and thought-provoking questions.<\/span><\/p>\n
