A NEW PHASE IN THE STUDY OF ISLAMIC CIVILIZATION: PRELIMINARY OUTCOMES OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

On April 23, a two-day international scientific-practical conference titled “The Formation of Islamic Civilization in Transoxiana” commenced at the Imam Bukhari International Scientific Research Center. This prestigious event has been organized in cooperation with the International Islamic University Malaysia and the Algeria Center for Islamic Sciences and Civilization, bringing together leading scholars and public figures from across the Islamic world.

At the opening ceremony of the conference, the Director of the Imam Bukhari International Scientific Research Center, Professor Shovosil Ziyodov; the Director of the Algeria Center for Islamic Sciences and Civilization, Dr. Ahmad Saghir; and Associate Professor at the International Islamic University Malaysia, Dr. Khayril Husayniy bin Jamil, among others, delivered remarks. They emphasized that the land of Transoxiana has for centuries served as a center of knowledge and spirituality, and underscored that, today more than ever, the in-depth study and international promotion of this rich heritage remain of paramount importance.

Within the scholarly discussions on the first day of the conference, a comprehensive analysis was conducted on the global impact of the intellectual legacy of scholars from Transoxiana, particularly its influence on the development of academic traditions in Southeast Asia and North Africa. In his presentation, Dr. Khayril Husayniy bin Jamil highlighted the continuous intellectual linkage between Transoxiana and the Malay Archipelago through the examples of scholars such as al-Tirmidhi and al-Marwazī. Meanwhile, Algerian experts presented significant findings regarding the preservation of rare manuscripts related to Transoxiana held in private collections within their country.

The event also paid particular attention to issues of Islamic ethics and spiritual education. Scholars from Uzbekistan and abroad widely discussed the role of Sufi teachings–particularly the Naqshbandi order and the legacy of Hakim al-Tirmidhi –in the moral and spiritual development of youth, as well as their significance in fostering and strengthening universal human values.

Another important strand of the discussions focused on the Maturidi theological tradition and the study of Hadith sciences. Participants examined, from the perspective of contemporary research, the methodological approaches of Imam Abu Mansur al-Maturidi, particularly his balanced integration of reason (‘aql) and transmitted knowledge (naql) in Qur’anic exegesis. They also reflected on the historical contributions of great hadith scholars such as Imam al-Bukhari and Imam al-Tirmidhi in laying the foundational principles of Hadith sciences.

The conference will continue its work on April 24. Its agenda includes the role of artificial intelligence in the study of Islamic civilization, as well as other relevant and contemporary methodological approaches.
