The main creative work written by al-Hakim as-Samarqandi is, of course, his book “As-savad al-a’zam” which reflects the viewpoints of the Hanafian order in Islam at the crossroads of the 9th-10lh centuries in Maveraunnahr. The problems discussed in this book are not only limited with the common problems of Islam. Alongside with them, it contains such information as the definition of faithfulness, psychological state of a guilty person, fate or conditions of state in another world, etc. The author pays necessary attention and express*’* his own opinion about Allah and his features, the power of the Creatoi of the Holy Quran, the sources of the Holy Qur’an, eschatology and belief, respect to the saints and devotedness to their teachings, respectable attitude towards the sahabas of the Prophet (saas), social and political relations between communities and even special problems of the Islamic law dealing with the questions under discussion.
The book also contains citations from the works of his opponents but he uses them in the common sense and shows their mistaken points in the description of the real state of things dealing with the problems under discussion, and thus supports his own viewpoints and the main principles of his outlook. In the course of description of urgent and controversial problems, the reader may come across some problems. The problem is in the fact that the author avoids the traditional description of problems in the order of their importance.
Describing the essence of the question under discussion the author sometimes jumps from one subject to another which has nothing to do with the question under discussion. Thus, perhaps he wanted to draw the reader’s attention to the main point to be taken into consideration. For instance, discussing the problem of faith and faithfulness the author jumps to the proble m of social community and then he comes back to the problem of faith and provides another article on it. Therefore, our imagination about the problems under discussion gets a shape of an important question and at the end of the discussion, we can have a full and melodically formed conclusion of the author.
On the one hand, such a classification of questions to be discussed and defined in the book makes it easier to understand its meaning and the essence of the idea it carries. However, on the other hand, such an approach to the structure and essence of the problems discussed in this book might lose some of its peculiarities which makes it a special kind of investigation on the urgent problems of Islam. Nevertheless, the author created a very important and precious manual for common Muslims of Maveraunnahr. As is mentioned in some sources, al-Hakim as-Samarqandi also created another book called “Al-e’tiqad” which attracted the attention of experts to the problems of Islam throughout the world.
